My last post grew out of a movie that had been hyped to the point that I was told that it would be the most amazing movie I'd see, evah. Considering my reaction to actually seeing the film, this week's List Friday topic is:
What Movies, After Much Hype, Have Disappointed You The Most Once You Saw Them?

H2G2, for sure. I knew it would let me down, so I wasn't surprised when it did, but I had hoped for better.
Hi Mr. Lady! H2G2 is, for those who don't know it, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Sorry for the geek footnote.
I posted this, but have had a hard time thinking up my own. But, here are a few:
1. Star Wars Episode I (Jar Jar Binks, dammit)
2. Crash, obviously.
3. A Mighty Wind. Not anywhere near Waiting for Guffman or Best in Show
4. Pi. Hated that movie, although everyone told me I'd love it. Overwrought film school crap.
5. Should have known, but Darren Aronofsky's (dude who made Pi)second movie, Requiem for a Dream. I just don't like that dude's work.
6. From Here to Eternity. I really thought it would be better what with the iconic beach love scene and all, but I was buh-buh-buh-bored.
7. Anything by John Waters, Female Trouble, especially. I have spent too much time with gay guys who think it is the funniest stuff ever, but then we watched it and I just think it is sick, twisted shit. And in some of his movies, SHIT is literal. It's disgusting!
1. “Interview with a Vampire” had so much hype, and I loved the book so much that I just couldn’t bear to see it. I did end up seeing it until a year or more after it was released. It was an okay movie, but definitely didn’t live up to the hype.
2. “Bram Stoker’s Dracula.” I made the mistake of reading the book before seeing the movie. It wasn’t actually “Bram Stoker’s” anything.
3. “E.T.” didn’t blow me away either… and everyone talked about from the moment it opened until… well, about now!
4. “Star Wars Episode II” – who would have thought the Clone Wars could be so boring?
5. “The Hulk” by Ang Lee. It got so much hype and I thought it would be so good (Ang Lee and all). But, it’s just a long cartoon with close ups of moss-covered rocks.
6. “South Pacific” was a complete disappointment for me. I was in love with the music (and musicals in general) and then realized that it was totally racist (and about people that could be my family). I was SO sad that I hardly ever sang “Dites-moi” again.
7. “Robin Hood” (Kevin Costner). I’d rather watch Errol swashbuckle. (But I do have to say that the over-the-top Nottingham played by Alan Rickman was fabulous and I’ve loved him ever since)
Total aside: I could actually just go on and on by listing Kevin Costner films that have disappointed me, but that would be as bad as his flicks.
8. “Ghost” is one of those movies that everyone loves and I thought was totally average. I spend a huge part of the movie (every time I see it) being annoyed at the whole “touching real stuff” part of the plot. They go to all this trouble to ensure that you understand cute Swayze can’t touch stuff… and he can just walk through the wooden door of Demi’s loft, but evidently he can STAND on wood because he never falls through the floor (and this horrible inconsistency wouldn’t bug me but for the fact that the film makes such a big deal out of it and then isn’t even consistent in its own mythology and now I’m ranting…) I actually stopped watching the Oscars when this film showed up in the nominations… it lost to “Dances with Wolves”.
After I posted last night, I watched about 10 minutes of "Cry Baby" (John Waters) and I think it's a really fun movie.
Molly, do you hate that one too?
It's got JD in it!!
No, Cry Baby would be one notable exception. Of course, Cry Baby lacks two things that the others have: 1. Divine. 2. Divine taking a crap in a park.
Excellent point!
I loved your list, by the way...
Grease. I was in my twenties the first time i tried to watch it. Horrible, nightmarish, evil movie.
Grease... it's also REALLY long. Long horrible, nightmarish, and evil movie!
i would have to agree with comments from the others.
1. star wars episode 1
2. et- it scared my brother and i more than anything. no idea why!
3. broken flowers- i hate to say that, because i love bill murray and i love the fact that jim j. decided to use all older women actresses, however it just left me blah. it could have been my mood too.
i knew interview with a vampire would suck because of who they chose to play the lead vampires (so not lestat and louis AND in my opinion the worst actors in hollywood) and the book is just so erotic.
geek, i am.
